Catasetum go dormant every year and look dead. They are not dead and will begin to grow again in a couple of months. If the newest bulb is hard, the plant is healthy. Healthy plants can still have soft or dried out back-bulbs. After they grow a new bulb, they will leaf out flower and then lose all the leaves. These are seedling plants and can vary somewhat in appearance. Jumbo orchids registered these in 1999 and should be reasonably stable in form and color.
