Catasetum go dormant every year and look dead. They are not dead and will begin to grow again in a couple of months. If the newest bulb is hard, the plant is healthy. Healthy plants can still have soft or dried out back-bulbs. After they grow a new bulb, they will leaf out flower and then lose all the leaves. This flower can be more yellow or shade to tan, with more of a fringe on the lip. The sub-family Clowesetum is known for flower longevity and high flower count.
