B. nodosa 4" in bloom
This species is the parent of hundreds of hybrids. When grossed with B. cordata it produced the hybrid called Little Stars. While Little stars is pure white when crossed with other cattleya, nodosa will produce spots on the offspring. Nodosa is has the color genes for spotting but it is suppressed in the speices. B.nodosa is often called Lady of the Night, because it is fragrant after dark (not at night if lights are on). It is fertilized by a night moth, which will not come out if there is too much light. Orchids are smart and will not release their perfume if the fertilizing insect is not around. These are young plants in 4 inch pots, flowering for the first time with 2 or more buds per plant.
